NZSBK Round 3 - Team BSP leaves Hampton Downs with one hand on the title

What a weekend! Round 3 at Hampton Downs was an incredible event which combined the NZSBK paddock with the Motofest spectacle bringing over 3000 spectators through the gates . It was an amazing experience for spectators and competitors alike with a wide range of entertainment and some spectacular racing.

Team BSP riders had a big weekend in the 125GP/ Moto3 class with Blayes Heaven scoring a perfect 3 wins out of 3 races including the New Zealand TT race. Jason Hearn scored his first ever podium in the class with a very impressive second place in race 1 as well as blasting his way to a convincing lap record for the class. Nicki Smith also had a good meeting slicing her lap times massively and Scott Topping scored a couple of consistent top ten placings. Sadly Chris Malcolm was unable to compete due to injury sustained on the Friday practice day.

Blayes Heaven - "A fantastic weekend at round 3, we started Friday practice really strong but just worked to refine the set up to go into qualifying with. Our one lap pace was very strong and with the short races we managed to keep the same lap times up over and going even faster towards the end of the race. We managed the gap to second place once I had managed to find the space in every race so we came away with 3 out of 3 race wins and around a 70 point lead in the championship. Looking forward to Taupo now and we hope to get the other hand on the championship trophy."

Jason Hearn - "I had a bit of a slow start to the Friday practice and running roughly 2 seconds off the pace but I managed to get on the pace qualifying third behind two four strokes. I got a good start in race 1 followed by a tow from Blayes for the first lap or two separating me from the chasing pack of 125's. This put me in a comfy third position until Regan made my race easier taking the tourist route into the kitty litter, letting me bring it home in 2nd place, my best finish yet. Race two started a bit rough but I got my head down trying to track down Chris Cain getting the 125GP Hampton Downs International circuit record in the process with a 1:47.267 and itt wasn't quite enough to catch Chris, loosing out on the podium by 0.039. During Race three my bike decided it had had enough of having its neck rung all weekend and started overheating and spitting water out of the radiator cap at me so this unfortunately meant a DNF. All in all it was a good weekend thanks to everyone who made it possible."

Nicki Smith - "Today I got a great start in race one and found myself comfortable and lapping consistently faster than yesterday bettering my PB by 6 seconds. Overall this weekend I had a blast on the 125, racing the international track at Hampton Downs, finishing every race and improving on my times. I can’t wait for the final round in 2 weeks at Taupo."

Scott Topping walked away with a couple of top ten fiinishes and continues to find the way forward. "The good thing is that I had no crashes or mechanical issues and I remain positive I can get to the pointy end of the field. My bike is running great and I continue to work well with the team. We have one more meeting at Taupo in a fortnight and all my focus will be at doing well there."

We are now two weeks away from the final round of the 2018 NZSBK Series with Blayes having one hand on the title and Jason being a real podium contender. Thank you all for your support and we will see you at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in Taupo.
